There were tons of maps to play on and a huge roster of characters to play as, each with its own strategies to learn and master.
It offered players the chance to work together with others in intense team-oriented gameplay.

Heroes of Newerth by S2 Games was a MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) game that consisted of two teams with 3 or 5 players each depending on the map. The objective of Heroes of Newerth was simple: to destroy the enemy team's base by accessing it through the lanes of the map. Once a team destroyed the opposing team's core building, they won the game. While it might have sounded easy on paper, there was a whole lot more to it than met the eye, and it took an absurd amount of time to learn it all.
The gameplay of Heroes of Newerth functioned like any MOBA game should. Each team map featured multiple lanes to go into, a jungle that consisted of neutral monsters, and map-wide objectives for the teams to take in order to acquire advantages over their opponents. Due to all of these things, it was pivotal that each player understood their role in the game and fulfilled it accordingly, as it could cause a lot of havoc if a player didn't fill the necessary role.
Going further into the gameplay, since it was a team-oriented game, it was crucial that players actually displayed acts of teamwork, or they would fail miserably. Often, multiple teams would lose a seemingly won game because they couldn't play cohesively as a team while their opposition could. You couldn't go as a lone wolf this time around as you needed your team to help you secure victory.
While all this teamwork was generally a good thing, it also came with a major downside: one bad player could ruin the entire game for a team. Basically, if you had one player who didn't communicate well and played more of a solo game, then that player had the potential to single-handedly lose you the entire game.
Moving on, graphically speaking, Heroes of Newerth looked satisfactory at best. The game had been around for quite some time, and while the newly added content to the game felt and looked pretty good, it was still filled with outdated visuals that made the game feel a tad bit lackluster in the visual department. As for sound effects, they were just brilliant. The background music of the game was pretty epic and meshed in nicely with the game, and the sound effects of all spells and abilities were also pretty well made and made said ability or spell seem a lot more powerful.
There were a lot of great things that Heroes of Newerth accomplished, but perhaps the biggest accomplishment of all was maintaining the balance of the game. It wasn't surprising that with such a huge roster of heroes, there were sure to be some 'overpowered' ones that simply did more than their opposition, but luckily, the balance team of Heroes of Newerth had done an excellent job of keeping all heroes in line and providing a balanced experience that felt fair to all.
One thing about Heroes of Newerth was that due to the extremely competitive nature of the game, you needed to be ready to deal with flamers at all times. A lot of players in the game played to win instead of playing to have fun, so you would be raged at for making even the slightest of mistakes. This might have been a nuisance but could easily be remedied by simply muting the raging player.
As for cash shop content, since the game was played at a competitive level, it was necessary that the cash shop didn't have items or content that offset the balance of the game, and fortunately, that was the case here. All cash shop items that were bought with real-world money were purely decorative and in no way enhanced your gameplay or provided you an unfair advantage.
Heroes of Newerth was a great MOBA game that emphasized heavily on teamwork and provided hours of endless hero-slaying fun. However, toxicity and various other factors had gotten the best of this classic MOBA, resulting in its closure on June 20, 2022.
